Philip Morris cigarette manufacturer, opened a New York subsidiary in 1902 to sell several of its cigarette brands. The Trademark “Marlboro” was listed in the United States in 1908, although no cigarette was sold under this name until 1923.

In 1924, this brand was launched. They are beginning marketing as “America’s luxury cigarette” and were mainly marketed in hotels and resorts

After scientists announced a major study linking smoking over lung cancer in the 1950s, Philip Morris repositioned Marlboro as one men’s cigarette to fit a market niche of men concerned with lung cancer.

At this time, filtered cigarettes were considered safer than unfiltered cigarettes, but it had only been sold to women until that time. At the time, men indicated that while they would think switching to a filtered cigarette, they were concerned of being noticed smoking a cigarette marketed to women.

Marlboro’s market share rose from less than one percent over the fourth best-selling Cigarette Brand. That convinced Philip Morris to leave the lineup of manly figures and hold with the cowboy, later known as the Marlboro Man. From 1963, the television commercials used Elmer Bernstein’s theme from The Magnificent Seven.

Although some historians say that Philip Morris’s growth to the top of the tobacco industry during the mid-1970s was because of its ingenious Marlboro ad campaign, starring a ruggedly handsome cowboy in the beautiful and relatively rugged West—”Marlboro Country”—the makers of competitor labels could justifiably disagree.

In the 1960s, with Philip Morris brands streaking forward of the pack, RJ Reynolds, American Tobacco, Lorillard, Liggett, and Brown and Williamson all began studies into the following: called “the secret” and eventually “the soul” of Marlboro. All discovered the ways of freebasing, but this didn’t occur overnight.

Brown and Williamson and its parent, British American Tobacco, were the first (after Philip Morris) to understand the importance of ammonia in increasing nicotine availability. Still, American Tobacco and these other companies stood not far behind.

RJ Reynolds included an ammoniated sheet into Camel Cigarettes in 1974, enabling them to deliver 36 mg of ammonia per cigarette in the mainstream smoke. Five years later, the company began using an ammoniated sheet in its famous Winston Cigarette brand. In a 1973 report marked “secret,” Teague noted that Marlboro, in comparison with RJ Reynolds’s own Winston cigarettes, showed.

In the late 1960s, Marlboro “Longhorn 100’s” were introduced. Although color-coded with gold, all were full flavor cigarettes, not lights. In 1972, Marlboro grew to the best-selling brand of tobacco in the world.

In 2013, Philip Morris International launched “Marlboro 2.0”. The pack design was replaced; the dark red was restored with some Marlboro lighter red, the “Marlboro” and Philip Morris logo became ribbed also transparent, and around 2017 a special “SmartSEAL” was added to keep the stored cigarettes fresh toward a longer period of time. The Marlboro 2.0 packs are mainly accessible in Europe and some parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, except in the United States, Canada, Australia (due to plain packaging), including New Zealand.
